Relays

Relays are the “brains” of the electrical distribution system. If an abnormality occurs on your system, they keep the damage to a minimum, helping to reduce your downtime and protect your people.

But, if your relays aren’t working properly, watch out. An overload or short circuit could result in a long, costly outage and extensive equipment damage.

The only way to be sure that your protective relays are up to the job they’re intended to do is to put them through a regular program of inspection, cleaning and calibration. You also need to be sure that relay settings are strategically selected and coordinated, to help minimize how much of your plant is affected by an overload or short circuit.

Emerson can provide these services, including creating and updating your single-line diagrams and short circuit and coordination studies to assure proper settings and coordination.

Replacing electromechanical (EM) relays is the fast, low-cost way to get the advantages of digital relays without the expense of new switchgear.  Emerson can help you design and implement upgrades and replacement of your aging protection based relay components. Digital relay upgrades, such as those from Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories, Mulhlin, GE, Baster, and many others will improve system reliability, safety, and allow for more flexible communication delivery within your facility.

Benefits

Properly maintaining your protective relays will:

  • Minimize system downtime and nuisance device operations
  • Avoid equipment damage or failure through increased system protection
  • Isolate faulty circuits without loss of power to other parts of the system
  • Identify and recommend corrective action for underprotected equipment
  • Ensure safety of personnel
