Highway/Traffic Lighting

RESOURCES

Highway/Traffic Lighting

Simply put, highway and traffic lighting are raised sources of light on the edge of a road or above a highway which turn on at a certain time every night. These lights may have light-sensitive photocells to turn them on at dusk, off at dawn, or activate automatically. It’s not uncommon for street /highway lights to be on posts which typically have wires strung between them, such as on telephone poles or utility poles. These lights provide illumination for directional and hazard signs, as well as a measure of safety for pedestrians. High-voltage surges, (lightning) can destroy one or all of the lights on a grid, creating safety issues, as well as costing municipalities thousands of dollars to replace.
