ASCO 920 Remote Control Switch Withstand Close-On Ratings

In addition to being listed under UL 508 for ballast lighting (electric discharge lamp), tungsten and general use ratings, ASCO 920 RC switches have been short circuit tested by UL for use in panelboards:

  • 22,000 amps with molded case circuit breaker.
  • 100,000 amps with current limiting fuse.
Under UL 67, panelboards having a short-circuit rating over 5000 amps are required to be marked with values specified by UL. Of particular importance is Paragraph 30.2 which states in part:

"A panel board shall not be marked with a short circuit current rating that (1) exceeds the short-circuit, interrupting, or withstand rating of any device intended to be installed therein for that rating..."

When you're selecting remote control switches to meet the short-circuit ratings of your panelboards remember these facts about ASCO 920 remote control switches:
  • ASCO 920's can be used in panelboards with molded case circuit breakers which have standard UL ratings through 22,000 amps symmetrical and/or with Class J current limiting fuses which have UL ratings of 100,000 amps symmetrical.
  • ASCO 920 ratings are compatible for use with UL listed molded case circuit breakers or current-limiting fuses whose ratings are 125% of the ASCO 920 ratings. The 125% is a minimum value; some ratings are 300%.

For years, ASCO 920 RC switches have been specified by a majority of consulting engineers for use in lighting panelboards. Because all ASCO 920's have short circuit ratings in excess of 5000 amps, they can continue to be specified and used in all panelboards with the assurance that they meet UL 67.

Maximum Voltage Ratings at Rated Amps, Open or Enclosed

When Connected 1 Pole to Load When Connected 2 Poles to Load on 1Ø and 3 Poles to Load on 3Ø
Ballast 277 VAC Ballast 480 VAC
Tungsten 250 VAC Tungsten 250 VAC
General Use 347 VAC General 600 VAC
For DC service maximum current rating is 75 amps or switch rating whichever is less, with maximum voltage rating of 125 volts when connected 1 pole to load and 250 volts when connected 2 poles to load.
