The MultiLink solution includes several components that can be configured to solve a wide variety of power protection problems.
The UPS
All Liebert UPS products support a simple "contact-closure" signal interface to a computer system. Many Liebert UPS products also support an SNMP network interface. Either UPS method is supported by MultiLink.
The Hardware Agent
Many Liebert UPS products support an SNMP Ethernet network interface and use the SNMP protocol to communicate to various software applications. In its simplest form, this UPS interface card can be configured to send UPS events to designated computers. The IP address of the target computer is specified in the agent card and the UPS will then notify the computer that an event has occurred. This way each computer powered by the UPS can be notified when the power fails, the battery is low or when the power returns. Each MultiLink client computer can then make decisions on how to handle each event.
The Software Agent
The software agent component of MultiLink can be installed on any computer located near the UPS and connected to the UPS contact-closure port. The software agent monitors the UPS and generates exactly the same UPS events as the Hardware Agent. In this configuration, the "contact-closure" interface provides the basic UPS conditions, and this protects the computers being powered by the UPS. As with the hardware agent, the software agent runs in the background and sends these UPS events via SNMP Traps to computers targeted by IP address.
The MultiLink Thin Shutdown Client
MultiLink uses a simple client/server model that allows "thin" shutdown clients to be installed and configured on any computer that is on the same network (TCP/IP connectivity) with either a hardware or software agent. These thin clients will respond to UPS events from either agent and allow for flexible user configuration of actions to be taken on the client computer.
This software is easily configured to notify your computer when the following events occur:
- On Battery
- Low Battery
- Return To Normal
When any of these conditions occurs, a message is sent to Windows NT domains and users connected to UNIX-based machines of your choice. If configured, networked computers will also begin shutdown procedures on the On Battery and Low Battery events. This allows shutdown of computers before data is lost or corrupted.
If you have Liebert UPS devices with SNMP agent cards, then these UPS devices can also initiate operating system shutdown. Simply configure the agent to send SNMP traps to each workstation connected to that UPS. The configured shutdown software will then be initiated when On Battery and Low Battery traps are received.
