Q: Is a UPS considered a medical device?

A: No, a UPS is a bridging device used by computing equipment and other technologies in order to temporarily maintain the supply of electricity when the primary input power is interrupted until primary power is restored or the alternate source (generator) can assume the load.

Q: Am I allowed to use a Liebert UPS in an operating room or to support the IT involved in other invasive procedures?

A: Yes, although medical applications such as invasive procedures and electrical life support equipment are subject to additional terms and conditions such as: United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand only, active hospital accreditation status and use is limited to certain UPS models and configurations. Liebert precision cooling units should never be installed directly over a patient or medical equipment.

Q: What does Liebert define as invasive procedures or electrical life support equipment?

A: Invasive procedures or electrical life support equipment applications include, but not limited to: operating theaters, heart catheterization equipment, bi-plane procedures, lasers for surgical use, fetal and neonatal monitors, anesthesia devices, incubators, patient monitors for intensive care, kidney dialysis machines, oxygen concentrator, respirator, ventilator, pressure breathing therapy, infusion feeding pump, and peritoneal dialysis machines.  Additional terms and conditions also may apply to: MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging), CT (Computed Tomography), ultrasound, PET (Positron Emission Tomography), PACS (Picture Archive Communication System), mammography, hyperbaric therapy, digital radiography, forensic labs, pathology labs, blood analysis, dental labs, and ophthalmic labs.

Q: Do Liebert UPSs have UL 60601-1 certification?

A: No. Liebert UPSs are not intended for use where the UPS would physically enter the “patient vicinity” which is an area that extends 6ft around a patient and 7 ½ feet directly above the floor. Liebert UPS are listed UL and cUL 1778 which is the standard for Uninterruptible Power Systems. UL 924 listing for Emergency Lighting is available on certain models.

Q: Are Liebert products “medical grade”?

A: No. The term medical grade may refer to devices which are intended for use in the patient vicinity. These devices require special plugs, receptacles and leakage to ground requirements as the device (such as an outlet in a headboard or patient monitor) may come into physical contact with a patient. In most instances a UPS will likely reside on an office desk, a networking closet or equipment room and will never be in contact with a patient and thus not need UL 60601-1 or medical grade labeling.
