Test & Measurement Power Supplies Overview

At Emerson Network Power - Embedded Power, our engineers have been designing and developing power supply products for the test & measurement market for over 35 years. Our products have helped pave the way for advancements in a wide variety of test & measurement applications, including oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, signal generators, logic analyzers, arbitrary waveform generators, multimeters and network analyzers.

Our power conversion products are also used in automatic test equipment (ATE) for analog, digital and mixed-signal boards, as well as in automatic semiconductor test equipment for memory, system-on-chip (SOC), VLSI and ASIC devices. Our AC-DC supplies are employed for powering the test equipment itself, with digitally programmable models being used for powering the unit or device under test (UUT or DUT).

Key attributes of power supplies for test & measurement instrumentation applications are output voltage accuracy and stability, good noise suppression and immunity, comprehensive output protection and battery management functions for portable equipment. For ATE use, additional attributes include remote on/off facilities, fast slew rates and digital programmability, low noise, tight regulation, and in some applications ingress protection, remote comms/monitoring equipment, ruggedized design.

Opportunities
  • The global semiconductor ATE market was worth $2.43 billion in 2008 – down approximately 33% from the previous year.
  • Although there is diminishing demand for system-on-chip (SOC) testers, the market for DRAM and flash memory testers is expected to pick up as soon as the economic recovery begins.
  • The board test ATE market has undergone considerable change in recent years, with many electronics companies shifting their manufacturing operations to Asia. Sales and support of ATE systems in this part of the world are consequently now regarded as the key market drivers.
  • The global market for wireless protocol analyzers and network-monitoring systems was worth $596 million in 2008, and is forecast to reach $814 million by 2013.
  • The global market for oscilloscopes was worth $1.2 billion in 2007, driven primarily by constantly evolving technologies in the communications and computer industries. The adoption of DisplayPort as a replacement for LVDS, DVI, and VGA interfaces in hi-res audio and video applications is expected to fuel further growth in the oscilloscope market.
  • The deployment of LTE in 2010 is expected to lead to a significant demand for specialized test & monitoring equipment for this technology.

Why Emerson Network Power - Embedded Power?
Worldwide, there are several test & measurement power supply manufacturers to choose from, many of which produce good products. One of the leading companies is Emerson Network Power - Embedded Power, which is responsible for the well-known Astec and Artesyn brands. Together, these two product brands encompass literally thousands of AC-DC power supplies and DC-DC converters. Emerson offers a large variety of standard, modified and custom AC-DC power supplies covering a 2 to 4,920 watt power band, together with an extensive range of DC-DC converters covering a 3 to 700 watt power band, to most of the world's most leading manufacturers of test & measurement equipment.

AC-DC Power Supplies
These power supplies are ideally suited to a wide variety of applications in communications, computing, storage, business systems, test, instrumentation and industrial equipment.
  • Low to medium power supplies extend from 25 to 500 watts
  • Many of the models above 60 watts offer harmonic current correction
  • Choice of single or multiple wide-range isolated outputs
These include a large number of models that are designed specifically as bulk power front-ends for systems that use DPA or IBA. They include 1U, 2U and 3U high rack-mounting modular power supplies with individual power ratings up to 3,000 watts, which can be used to configure bulk power systems with very high output capabilities.
  • Individual power ratings up to 3,000 watts
  • Includes 1U, 2U and 3U high rack-mounting modular power supplies
  • Designed as bulk power front-ends for systems that use DPA or IBA
Most of the low to medium power modules are capable of operating from standard single-phase 115- or 230-volt AC mains supplies, with auto-selection of the appropriate voltage. The medium power modules offer a choice of single-phase or three-phase inputs, while the highest power modules are designed solely for three-phase supplies.
  • DIN rail mount AC-DC power supplies extends from 60 to 960 watts
  • Designed for an industrial environment with no derating up to 60˚
  • Modules offer a choice of single-phase or three-phase inputs
Emerson's range of external freestanding power adapters are available for class I or class II applications. Note that the AC input cables themselves are not provided. All the power adapters feature extensive safety approvals.
  • Adapters extend from 3 to 100 watts
  • Features wide-range AC inputs and comprehensive overload protection
  • Available with a 2- or 3-pin AC input receptacle
These include individual power modules that enable customers to configure bulk power systems. At the same time they are renowned for their outstanding performance, reliability and cost-effective.
  • Output ratings of up to 3,000 watts
  • Bulk power systems with up to 18 kilowatts output capability
  • Medical versions available with extensive built-in intelligence
DC-DC Converters
Design engineers are attracted to FPGA Modules because of their programming flexibility. They allow you to easily change your product as end user needs change. Does it make any sense to then power your FPGA modules with inflexible analog power supplies? Altera, Xilinx and other FPGA manufacturers responded NO - it is better to incorporate flexibility throughout your FPGA design to respond quickly to changes in the future.
Emerson Network Power's portfolio of Industry-Standard Isolated DC-DC Converters covers sixteenth- to full-brick form factors and power ratings from 3 watts to 700 watts.
Emerson Network Power offers an extensive range of Low Power DC-DC Converters for general-purpose industrial applications. Covering power outputs from 3 watts to 30 watts,
Emerson Network Power's portfolio of Non-Isolated DC-DC Converters is one of the most extensive in the industry. It includes five application-optimized product families, together with a series of specialized memory power and voltage regulator modules (VRMs) for processors, spanning an output current range of 3 to 105 A.
Emerson Network Power's extensive range of DC-DC converters includes a number of high-efficiency ultra low profile models for applications where above-board height is severely restricted.
