Robotics Power Supplies Overview

At Emerson Network Power - Embedded Power, our engineers have been designing and developing power supply products for the robotics market for over 35 years. Our products have helped pave the way for advancements in a wide variety of robotics applications, including automated assembly, manufacturing and packaging systems, goods handling and transport robots, digitally programmable pick-and-place systems and portal robots.

Key attributes of power supplies for robotics applications are a wide operating temperature range, high efficiency and reliability, and small form factors, DIN rail mounting, ingress protection.

Opportunities
  • The global market for industrial robots was worth approximately $6.2 billion in 2008, excluding software, peripherals and systems engineering.
  • By the end of 2007, there were around 1 million industrial robots in use, worldwide. About 60% of these are articulated robots, and about 22% are gantry robots.
  • The automotive industry is the largest user of industrial robots.
  • Although the global economic crisis has severely impacted sales of industrial robots – especially in the key automotive sector – the need to automate industrial processes to improve efficiency and safety of the work place remains constant, and is expected to lead to renewed growth between 2010 and 2012.

Why Emerson Network Power - Embedded Power?
Worldwide, there are several robotic power supply manufacturers to choose from, many of which produce good products. One of the leading companies is Emerson Network Power - Embedded Power, which is responsible for the well-known Astec and Artesyn brands. Together, these two product brands encompass literally thousands of AC-DC power supplies and DC-DC converters. Emerson offers a large variety of standard, modified and custom AC-DC power supplies covering a 2 to 4,920 watt power band, together with an extensive range of DC-DC converters covering a 3 to 700 watt power band, to most of the world's most leading manufacturers of robotic equipment.

AC-DC Power Supplies
These power supplies are ideally suited to a wide variety of applications in communications, computing, storage, business systems, test, instrumentation and industrial equipment.
  • Low to medium power supplies extend from 25 to 500 watts
  • Many of the models above 60 watts offer harmonic current correction
  • Choice of single or multiple wide-range isolated outputs
Most of the low to medium power modules are capable of operating from standard single-phase 115- or 230-volt AC mains supplies, with auto-selection of the appropriate voltage. The medium power modules offer a choice of single-phase or three-phase inputs, while the highest power modules are designed solely for three-phase supplies.
  • DIN rail mount AC-DC power supplies extends from 60 to 960 watts
  • Designed for an industrial environment with no derating up to 60˚
  • Modules offer a choice of single-phase or three-phase inputs
These include individual power modules that enable customers to configure bulk power systems. At the same time they are renowned for their outstanding performance, reliability and cost-effective.
  • Output ratings of up to 3,000 watts
  • Bulk power systems with up to 18 kilowatts output capability
  • Medical versions available with extensive built-in intelligence
DC-DC Converters
Design engineers are attracted to FPGA Modules because of their programming flexibility. They allow you to easily change your product as end user needs change. Does it make any sense to then power your FPGA modules with inflexible analog power supplies? Altera, Xilinx and other FPGA manufacturers responded NO - it is better to incorporate flexibility throughout your FPGA design to respond quickly to changes in the future.
Emerson Network Power's portfolio of Industry-Standard Isolated DC-DC Converters covers sixteenth- to full-brick form factors and power ratings from 3 watts to 700 watts.
Emerson Network Power offers an extensive range of Low Power DC-DC Converters for general-purpose industrial applications. Covering power outputs from 3 watts to 30 watts,
Emerson Network Power's extensive range of DC-DC converters includes a number of high-efficiency ultra low profile models for applications where above-board height is severely restricted.
