Access Power Supplies Overview

At Emerson Network Power - Embedded Power, our engineers have been designing and developing power supply products for the access market for over 35 years. Our products have helped pave the way for advancements in numerous access applications, including digital loop carrier (DLC) systems, digital subscriber line access multiplexers (DSLAM/IPDSLAM), cable modem termination systems (CMTS), fiber to the "x" (FTTX) installations, passive optical networks (GPON/GEPON), Ethernet access devices (EAD), backhaul over microwave.

Access solutions used to be referred to as the ‘last-mile bottleneck’, but are now considered by broadband users to be the first mile of differentiation of the operator's offering. Broadband-access capabilities are a prime source of differentiation for the basic fixed and mobile Internet access service, as the ability to add additional broadband enables services such as IPTV, mobile TV and multimedia telephony.

Key Power Supply Requirements Include: wide temperature range, robust design, high system availability and battery management, in some applications, fanless design, ingress protection, remote communications.

Opportunities
  • The global market for carrier Ethernet access platforms is currently worth $935 million a year (2009 figure).
  • The global market for Ethernet-over-fiber access solutions is growing rapidly – it is currently running at 14 percent quarter-over-quarter (Q2009 figure).
  • Continuing growth of Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) connectivity solutions and IP multimedia subsystems (IMS) in both commercial and residential applications.
  • LTE deployment is scheduled to begin in 2010.

Why Emerson Network Power - Embedded Power?
Worldwide, there are several access power supply manufacturers to choose from, many of which produce good products. One of the leading companies is Emerson Network Power - Embedded Power, which is responsible for the well-known Astec and Artesyn brands. Together, these two product brands encompass literally thousands of AC-DC Power Supplies and DC-DC Converters. Emerson offers a large variety of standard, modified and custom ac-dc power supplies covering a 2 to 4,920 watt power band, together with an extensive range of DC-DC converters covering a 3 to 700 watt power band, to most of the world's most leading manufacturers of access equipment.

AC-DC Power Supplies
These power supplies are ideally suited to a wide variety of applications in communications, computing, storage, business systems, test, instrumentation and industrial equipment.
  • Low to medium power supplies extend from 25 to 500 watts
  • Many of the models above 60 watts offer harmonic current correction
  • Choice of single or multiple wide-range isolated outputs
These include a large number of models that are designed specifically as bulk power front-ends for systems that use DPA or IBA. They include 1U, 2U and 3U high rack-mounting modular power supplies with individual power ratings up to 3,000 watts, which can be used to configure bulk power systems with very high output capabilities.

Emerson Network Power's VS series of Modular AC-DC Power Supplies enables customers to configure power supplies with up to 2,500 watts output capability. The series offers 10 types of modules, including single, dual and triple output units, with individual power outputs of up to 1,500 watts. The VS series offers 9 standard output voltages, from 2 Vdc to 48 Vdc, and can provide up to 18 outputs.
Emerson Network Power's iVS™ series of modular ac-dc power supplies is very similar to the VS series but provides increased output power and functionality. Customers are now able to configure power supplies with up to 4,860 watts output capability, and to monitor and control many attributes of the power supply via I2C.
Emerson's range of external freestanding power adapters are available for class I or class II applications. Note that the AC input cables themselves are not provided. All the power adapters feature extensive safety approvals.
  • Adapters extend from 3 to 100 watts
  • Features wide-range AC inputs and comprehensive overload protection
  • Available with a 2- or 3-pin AC input receptacle
Compact, self-contained power solution for MicroTCA systems can support shelves, cubes and other system implementations, and are fully compliant with the PICMG MicroTCA.0 Revision 1.0 specification.
  • MTC600 contain 600 watts output power
  • Modules can support shelves, cubes, and other system implementations
  • Available in dc-input and ac-input
DC-DC Converters
Design engineers are attracted to FPGA Modules because of their programming flexibility. They allow you to easily change your product as end user needs change. Does it make any sense to then power your FPGA modules with inflexible analog power supplies? Altera, Xilinx and other FPGA manufacturers responded NO - it is better to incorporate flexibility throughout your FPGA design to respond quickly to changes in the future.
Emerson Network Power's portfolio of Industry-Standard Isolated DC-DC Converters covers sixteenth- to full-brick form factors and power ratings from 3 watts to 700 watts.
Emerson Network Power offers an extensive range of Low Power DC-DC Converters for general-purpose industrial applications. Covering power outputs from 3 watts to 30 watts,
Emerson Network Power's portfolio of Non-Isolated DC-DC Converters is one of the most extensive in the industry. It includes five application-optimized product families, together with a series of specialized memory power and voltage regulator modules (VRMs) for processors, spanning an output current range of 3 to 105 A.
Emerson Network Power's extensive range of DC-DC converters includes a number of high-efficiency ultra low profile models for applications where above-board height is severely restricted.
