Welcome, N.C. Plant Records 1,000,000 Man-Hours Without a Lost Day Accident
Florham Park, N.J. June 6, 2012 — Emerson Network Power, a business of Emerson (NYSE: EMR) and a global leader in maximizing availability, capacity and efficiency of critical infrastructure, reports that its Welcome, N.C. manufacturing facility for ASCO Power has surpassed 1,000,000 man-hours worked without a lost day accident. Emerson Network Power’s ASCO Power business is a global leader in transfer switch and paralleling switchgear technology.
Michael Quinn, ASCO Power Technologies VP of Operations, said, “This milestone recognizes the day-in and day-out effort by employees to work safely. Much of the credit goes to them.”
The Welcome plant’s accomplishment follows the more than 3.5 million man-hours worked without a lost day accident at another company facility in Reynosa, Mexico that also manufactures ASCO Power equipment.
Emerson Network Power’s plant achieved both milestones by using ergonomically designed workspaces and automation. Automation at the Welcome facility, for example, helps reduce employee handling of sheet metal and other materials that may cause worker injuries. For example, robotics transports sheet metal components and parts to employees instead of employees travelling to the component.
Employee safety also is enhanced through personal protective equipment (PPE) such as safety goggles, back support harnesses and hearing protection. Warning signs and markings on the factory floor help employees safely navigate through the facility. Employees also utilize weight assists for lifting heavy objects that, otherwise, might cause injury.
In a 2009, 28-page report, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics lists figures regarding illnesses and injuries in many different industries, including fabricated metal product manufacturing and the electrical equipment, appliance and component manufacturing industries. These numbers validate the significance the 1,000,000 man-hour benchmark represents.
At more than 350,000 sq. ft., the facility is the largest and most modern dedicated transfer switch manufacturing facility in the world, according to ASCO executives.
Skilled employees supervise the automated processes and ensure that specifications are met for each transfer switch. Rigorous testing and inspections are conducted several times during each phase of production to make certain that ASCO Power Transfer Switches are manufactured to the highest standards.
Employees are trained regularly to facilitate a safer, more efficient work environment. Training includes how to properly use and troubleshoot equipment, the proper use of PPE and identifying the proper tool for its intended purpose.
The manufacturing facility is ISO (International Organization for Standardization) 9001-2008 approved.
