Service Entrance

A building service entrance refers to the wiring that connects the electric utility's cables in the street, through the meter and to a main panelboard at the building. High-voltage transients, such as lightning or grid switching, can cause catastrophic damage in this area, with the potential of putting an entire facility in the dark. Surge suppressors provide protection from these occurrences by limiting let-through voltage which may also destroy down-stream equipment.
